Wellness Tips for Thanksgiving

🦃 Keep moving- Do a turkey trot, or just a 5 minute walk outside with the family. Go outside & play games with the younger cousins or nieces & nephews! Keeping your body moving will help you have more energy & feel better.

🦃Set & keep your boundaries- If you just had a miscarriage & your great aunt wants to talk about it or your uncle makes comments like, ā€œWhy are you not married yet?ā€ and you don’t want to talk about these topics… just kindly change the subject or politely say you are not comfortable talking about it. If you have a very toxic, negative aunt that criticizes you and cuts you down every time you’re with her… you can say hi, but try not to sit by her & don’t find ways to go over & make conversation. You get the point- make your boundaries & keep them this Thanksgiving!

🦃Share your gratitude- List things you’re grateful for. If you are grateful for what you have, then what you have, is enough. As you focus on gratitude, you will be happier, be more optimistic, have less anxiety, & enjoy the present moment more.

🦃Skip the food guilt- It’s Thanksgiving! Be wise & listen to your body, but don’t beat yourself up for what you eat or don’t eat, or how much do or don’t eat. You can say no to food! I doubt your grandma will be watching to see if you take that green bean casserole you really hate! If it doesn’t sit well or you’re full, politely say something like, ā€œNo, I’m really okay, thank you for offering. That looks delicious, but I’m full right now.ā€ Don’t make yourself sick just because you don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings. On the other hand, if you eat and eat, and are beating yourself up for eating too much. Don’t! Realize this is one day and one day won’t kill your progress in the long-run!

🦃Don’t skip breakfast! I know what you’re thinking: ā€œI’m going to save room.ā€ Imagine how hungry you’ll be and how much you’ll binge once your sister brings out that appetizer tray! You’ll most likely be so hungry you’ll eat too much & too fast, feeling sick later. Plus if you don’t eat all day, your blood sugar will dip & you’ll most likely be hangry & cranky (Buro, 2021). So please! Eat a balanced breakfast on Thanksgiving! You’re less likely to eat more than you should & you’ll have less cravings if you eat a balanced breakfast.

🦃Drink a glass of water before your meal! You’ll eat less if you do this! You’ll get full faster if you drink water throughout the day. Limit or avoid sugary drinks & alcohol.

🦃Take your time chewing & eating! This will help you eat slower and will help your digestion. The more you chew, the less your digestive system has to do. The slower & more mindful you eat, the less food you’ll eat.
